New description:

 Since upgrading to Snow Leopard wireshark will not launch. Tried
 upgrading macports, x1, and xcode to no avail. When I try to launch
 wireshark, I get the following console message :

 {{{
 Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "/tmp/launch-mzLy7N/:0".
 }}}

 And then nothing.....wireshark process is spiking CPU and will not stop
 until I kill the process.

Comment:

 The Xlib message is normal and is not the problem.
