 Thank you very much for your quick and skillful fix.

 Once I'd worked out to what todo with the patch files the build worked a
 treat!

 commands used to get tripwire built:

 # cd $(port dir tripwire)
 # patch -p0 <Portfile-tripwire.diff
 # cp patch-configure.diff files/.
 # port install tripwire
