 information it gets from System Preferences (unless you use automatic
 proxy settings) so make sure that is right.  If you need to override, see
 /opt/local/etc/macports/macports.conf at the end.

 That was very useful information. By editing
 /opt/local/etc/macports/macports.conf and following the instructions for
 proxies this problem went away. Thanks!
