 I  am trying to install the "latest" (per the MacPorts webpage) version of
 MacPorts -- 1.8 -- for Snow Leopard.

 Granted, Snow Leopard is version 10.6  while I'm trying to install on
 10.6.1.
 Will 1.8 install on 10.6.1?

 There has been no version of either DarwinPorts nor MacPorts installed on
 this machine.

 What is this "pre-installation" program looking for?

 The error message is not provided --- but missing according to the program
 itself.
