This is the second time I have heard this problem with freetype. (#21398
was the first.) Please rebuild freetype and see if that fixes things.

If that fixes it, and you can provide any idea about why freetype didn't
build correctly the first time, I'd greatly appreciate it, as I'm at a
loss.

That issue was fixed 9 months ago and is closed.

No such file or directory
This file should not be missing. It should be provided by freetype, which
you've shown you have installed:
> freetype @2.3.9_1+macosx+universal (active)
