 You could try to execute it, e.g.

 /opt/local/bin/freetype-config --libs
 }}}

 zlib is definitely installed because it is a dependency of freetype. The
 question is whether it is installed universal or not. You can find out by
 typing

 {{{
 port installed zlib
 }}}
