Comment(by ryandesign@…):

 Jeremy, here's [attachment:alphamail-1.0.44-ryandesign.diff my updated
 patch, based on yours]. I changed the whitespace so it matches what was in
 the portfile; deleted the configure.cxxflags-append line that was there
 from before because I wouldn't expect that to be necessary (that kind of
 thing usually goes in configure.cppflags where MacPorts already puts it);
 deleted the configure.ldflags-append line you added because what you're
 appending is what MacPorts already puts there; fixed your default_variants
 line (needed a "+" before the variant name). And I filed an
 [https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=2988933&group_id=183361&atid=904932
 upstream bug report] for the build problem. I talk a bit more about
 [http://lists.macosforge.org/pipermail/macports-dev/2010-April/011668.html
 my experience trying to update this port] on the mailing list, where Scott
 Haneda asked how I handle port updates and I picked this port at random as
 an example.
