 I removed all installed extensions (had apc & xdebug) and the problem
 persisted. also started using the php.ini that comes with the port rather
 than mine and still had the problem.

 i'm going to take a break for tonight as i've compiled php52 about 20
 times in the past couple of hours :-P will report back here when i try to
 compile again...
