 This port builds --without-cairo explicitly. I built a gnuplot by hand
 using --with-cairo and changed my term to pdfcairo and both font selection
 with all OS-X fonts and utf-8 characters work.

 I'm using cairo @1.8.10_0+macosx from macports on 10.6.3 with xcode 3.2.2
