 3) patches already in the port
 4) original work so it could theoretically go upstream

 It applies to 2.4b1.

 Integrate if you wish. I don't believe in patch-per-file, I prefer patch-
 per-reason-to-patch, and in this case there is one: "depend on modern
 libraries".
