 Here is what Brad (co-maintainer of this port) suggested:

 With these vars it's easier to change the build without committing changes
 to Makefile.

 I think it's perfectly acceptable to require env vars for make. That's how
 postfix does it. Now ./configure.

 (I'll attach the corresponding patch files in a minute.)

 What do you guys think about this hack?
