 Daniel beat me to it, but I was going to say:

 When moving from one version of Mac OS X to another (e.g. Tiger to Snow
 Leopard) you must uninstall and reinstall all ports. The [wiki:Migration
 Migration] page has more information.

 Since your existing installation is so old, you would first need to
 upgrade to
 [http://svn.macosforge.org/repository/macports/downloads/MacPorts-1.7.1/
 MacPorts 1.7.1], then upgrade to the [http://www.macports.org/install.php
 current version of MacPorts]. However, MacPorts 1.7.1 never ran on Snow
 Leopard. Therefore, you probably need to completely
 [http://guide.macports.org/chunked/installing.macports.uninstalling.html
 uninstall your old MacPorts / DarwinPorts] and then install the
 [http://www.macports.org/install.php current version].
