New description:

 After running sudo port upgrade outdated,
 {{{
 --->  Computing dependencies for freetype
 --->  Fetching freetype
 ...
 }}}

 If I run the command again, I get
 {{{
 Error: No ports matched the given expression
 }}}

 I also had the same problem after installing fresh port on another mac.

Comment(by ryandesign@…):

 I'm not sure I understand. What's been eliminated in the "..." above? Did
 freetype upgrade successfully? If not, or if some other port failed, can
 you attach the relevant main.log?

 The response "No ports matched the given expression" following "sudo port
 upgrade" simply means there are no outdated ports anymore.
