Actually, "`echo $PATH melt`" only prints out (echoes) the value of the
variable $PATH and then the string "melt"; it says nothing about whether
the `melt` program is available anywhere.

Ok, ''that'' shows that the `melt` program is indeed available in your
PATH.
I see /sw in your PATH above. That's where Fink is traditionally
installed. Do you also have Fink installed, in addition to MacPorts? If
so, that can easily cause all sorts of problems and is therefore not
supported. Pick one package manager to use (MacPorts or Fink) and
uninstall the other.
