New description:

 I had the same problem. I ran with debug flags, and found it was
 complaining about incorrect architecture. I'm pretty sure that if I
 rebuilt the xorg-libX11 port with +universal, it will work (and I'm trying
 that now). Yes, I'm running Snow Leopard.
