 an update: GDB 7.1.50 gets installed fine, but there are problems when
 trying to load a program to debug (e.g. python in this case):

 Starting program: /opt/local/bin/python
 Unable to find Mach task port for process-id 37881: (os/kern) failure
 (0x5).
  (please check gdb is codesigned - see taskgated(8))

 any ideas how to fix this?
