 The problem was solved by issuing the following commands

  * sudo port sync
  * sudo port clean --all rdiff-backup
  * sudo port install -vd  rdiff-backup

 I did look at [wiki:ProblemHotlist] but not the [wiki:FAQ#checksums FAQ].
