 the existing macport has been stuck at version 2.4.3 and is apparently
 abandoned.  the new year has brought a new version of PDL: 2.4.6.  there
 are many improvments and bugfixes, especially to 3D support which now
 requires p5-opengl.

 i needed to patch the plplot build for some reason i don't quite
 understand.  there are also various hard-coded paths strewn around the
 code that i have tried to deal with post-patch.  i will try to work
 upstream to change that
