 I think that variant is necessary for dependencies:

 $ port deps ocaml-mode.el
 Full Name: ocaml-mode.el @3.05
 Runtime Dependencies: ocaml
 Library Dependencies: emacs

 I am not ports expert, so maybe there is another way to handle this, but I
 do not want ocaml-mode.el to install emacs for me if I already have emacs-
 app.
