Comment:

 I'm not thrilled with adding a variant for this purpose.

 Instead, it would make sense for the user to set startupitem_type to none
 in macports.conf when he installs MacPorts as a non-root user and does not
 want launchd plists created. Then, the port could be modified to only
 create the user account and data directory if ${startupitem.type} is not
 none. At least I theorize this should work; I have not tested.
