 I just now built octave for SL.   ncurses and gettest were already
 installed
 and /opt/local/lib/libncurses.dylib is x86_64.   Did you try rebuilding
 ncurses?
 The news is not all good: imread give "Assertion failed" and "plot 0:10"
 gives
 "error:plot no data to plot".   I am however pleased to report that 2+2
 gives
 ans = 4.
