Comment:

 I got it backwards: the Configure script adds "`-lz`" ''unless'' we use
 "zlib-dynamic". So "`-lz`" is there, so this is not the problem. At this
 point I don't know how to solve this.

 Also, the problem occurs only when using an SDK, which is only on Tiger
 PowerPC when building universal.
