 Folks - thank you for the help.  Indeed the build works properly and the
 tar ball can be found as expected by the build with a working network!.
 My issue was my employer's internal network (sigh).  If I see this type of
 error again, I'll know where to look, so I can tell our IT folks that they
 have issue.

 However ... in the course of debugging this, I learned that in this case
 tool, the airport-ng folks are no longer advertising version 1.0 - if you
 try to go to the web site directly, they do not seem to have a pointer to
 that tarball, only the newer version (1.1).  However clearly, the old path
 you have in your build still works.  But I think that may be a warning, we
 might want to look into updating before that path goes away and/or moving
 the *1.0 tarball ball to intermediate location ???FreeBSD distfile archive
 maybe - you tell me??? in case the link does go away.
