 I managed to overwrite the Portfile (from a Time Machine backup) and built
 and installed and activated freetype @2.3.12. I also had to deactivate
 xorg-server-devel @1.8.99.904_1 in order to make xorg-server-devel
 @1.8.99.904_0 launch which uses freetype @2.3.12. Here is a screen-shot.
