 I had a look at the log file and found:

 :info:build ld: in /usr/local/lib/libstdc++.6.dylib, file was built for
 i386 which is not the architecture being linked (x86_64)
 :info:build collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
 :info:build make: *** [miniperl] Error 1

 As /usr/local/lib is full of Leopard stuff created before upgrading to
 Snow Leopard, I decided to wipe the hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard.
 Now perl5.8 builds without any errors. Thanks for your help, my problem is
 now resolved.
