Comment:

 Please remember to cc the maintainer. The mysql5 port's server variant is
 deprecated (and in fact no longer exists) because that functionality is
 now provided by a separate port called mysql5-server (which is different
 to "mysql5 -server", which is the mysql5 port with the "server" variant
 deselected).

 There doesn't seem to be much here we can fix, since your problems appear
 to have come from following not-entirely-correct third party instructions.
 I guess what's left is a request for mysql5 to create log and run
 directories?
