 This is for 1.9.0-rc2 sorry if I set the version wrong...

 If I do:

 sudo port setrequested git

 (where "git" is any port that is not installed or does not exist)

 then the output is as shown below.  This is perhaps not the most helpful
 type of message to print in this situation.
