 I had the same problem building alpine on my machine, and the workaround
 made it compile nicely. Thanks for providing it!

 For other newbies wondering where the portfile to be edited is located, it
 can be found at:

 /opt/local/var/macpoarts/sources/rsync.macports.org/release7port/mail/alpine/Portfile
