 An update: there appears to still be a real bug in the code produced by
 the stage2 compiler (the haddock built by the stage2 compiler crashes with
 an abort trap).

 The situation right now is the compiler build finishes, but some of the
 utilities built by the generated compiler crash. Some of the utilities
 seem to work, which suggests that the underlying problem is limited.
