 I had the exact same problem as the initial poster. Then I cleaned the
 port and tried installing again, and lo and behold it went smoothly, that
 time. First time the install was made as dependency from ncurses which
 itself was installed as a dependency. Second time I tried installing
 ncursesw directly.
