 Doesn't it seem sensible that MacPorts should use the path_helper
 mechanism and install a file into /etc/paths.d, the contents of which
 could be something like:

 /opt/local/bin
 /opt/local/sbin

 This seems much less invasive than modifying the user's shell startup
 files in their home directory (which also only works for the user that
 installed MacPorts).
