 OK .. well, I started over again and left Universal variant on.  GCC44
 compiling now, and is well passed the MPFR check.

 So if this has to be fixed upstream then there is no need to keep this
 defect open. And since I was wrong about being able to build 64 bit on a
 Snow Leopard that doesn't boot 64 bit, I guess there is no need for me
 worry about Universal builds anymore.
