Comment:

 It builds fine for me on Snow Leopard. I suspect one of avarice's
 dependencies (binutils?) is not installed with the proper architectures.

 I just updated avarice to 2.10 and added the archcheck portgroup to aid in
 discovering which dependency is missing which architectures. Please "sudo
 port selfupdate" and try again.
