 Thanks, committed in r67907 and r67908 with some changes:

  * disabled universal variant
  * used configure phase variables instead of overriding the configure
 phase
  * simplified build.args: used ${configure.cppflags} for value of
 PKG_CFLAGS, and didn't set PKG_DEPLIBS because it built fine without it;
 let me know if this still works on your system
  * removed post-build gzipping of manpages since MacPorts does this
 automatically
  * install non-executable files without the executable bit
  * some doc files ended up readable only by the owner (root) so I added
 code to traverse the doc directory and fix the permissions so everyone can
 read these files
  * some whitespace and formatting changes
