Comment:

 One reason to offer the choice (if both indeed work) is that nss doesn't
 have a universal variant, meaning pidgin and finch can't have one either
 if they depend on nss (see #23485). Building universal is nice, especially
 as of Snow Leopard. gnutls already has a universal variant so if pidgin
 and finch were to offer a gnutls option, that would let pidgin and finch
 build universal too.
