 Actually, tetex doesn't even build anymore -- its post-activate script
 fails when running fmtutil. It looks like the latex sources check the
 system clock and refuse to build when the sources are more than 5 years
 old.

 I think upgrading tetex to texlive works smoothly if we add tetex to the
 list of ports to deactivate in texlive-common's pre-activate hook (along
 with the old texlive_base, etc), and set `replaced_by texlive` on tetex,
 but I'm still testing it...
