 You should NOT update the port avr-gcc to a new revision:
 avr-gccs differ in their optimization techniques.
 avr-gcc of revision 4.0.2 is known to produce very good space saving
 optimizations with -Os.

 Rather make a new port avr-gcc-43 or avr-gcc-newest or whatsoever.
