 Thanks for the tip!

 Didn't have python_select installed, and once it was installed all
 "python_select -l" would show was current, none, python26 and
 python26-apple. Don't know which was set from the get-go, if any (perhaps
 python26-apple?), but setting it to python26 as proposed here worked like
 a charm!
