 I am getting the same problem.

 Running sudo port -d install avahi, this is the last line before it
 freezes:

 checking for /opt/local/bin/python2.6 extension module directory...
 ${exec_prefix}/lib/python2.6/site-packages

 I have tried reinstalling XQuartz and logging out as suggested here, but
 it does not help.
