 Ok, I now know how to replicate the problem. The date program, which after
 being invoked by tmux through the status bar wasn't quitting for whatever
 reason. It was spawning up to the maximum number of processes then
 crashing tmux. This was the problem line in .tmux.conf.

 set -g status-right '#[fg=colour159]#(date "+%d %h %l:%M %p")  Battery
 #(battery-life)  '
