 Thanks for the note about CCing. Erlang is definitely compiled with SSL,
 and couchdb will compile cleanly when run directly:

 WC-MacBook ~ $ port list variant:ssl | grep erlang
 erlang                         @R14B03         lang/erlang
 }}}

 Any chance it could be a shell issue; some permissions than an user's
 interactive shell would have that a subshell wouldn't?
