 Fixing this isn't as straightforward as usual because montage hardcodes
 "gcc" as well as various extra options into the CC variable in many
 places.

 I realized this after committing the port, but for the reasons you
 indicated did not manage to get it to work (there is a lot of hardcoding
 going on). I will try and fix this when I have a chance, but let me know
 if you try/manage to fix it in the mean time.
