 I have been trying to update.  I keep getting an error (below).  I have
 tried "port -f uninstall --follow-dependents installed" but reinstalling
 fails at the same point.

Comment:

 Did you just selfupdate from MacPorts 1.9.x to MacPorts 2.0.1? If so,
 please rerun `port selfupdate` and retry. There's a bug (#30739)  that's
 causing the index to not be properly generated the first time after the
 base upgrade.
