 matplotlib is unable to save PDF files (test code attached).  It crashes
 with an assertion error related to font encoding:

   File
 "/opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/lib/python2.7
 /site-packages/matplotlib/dviread.py", line 727, in _register
     assert encoding is None
 AssertionError

 A patch has been proposed to work around the issue:
