 thanks for the info - a reinstall of Xcode 4.1 (the only version I have)
 doesn't work though.

 The Carbon header files mentioned are present installed in the right
 directory:
 {{{
 /System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Headers
 ]]]
 albeit aliased. Not sure what could have changed between Xcode versions to
 make it fail.
