Comment:

 I've now built and tested much code with gcc-4.6.2 on 10.6 and removing
 the `--enable-fully-dynamic-string` has not ill effects with system code.

 Given the `openmaintainer` status and the diff committed by `mww`, I'm
 committing in r87835
