 This problem is the reason I disabled the opengl variant by default in the
 latest version. You need to make sure the mesa port is install with the
 x11 variant enabled, which is not th default.

 Either remove the opengl variant (i.e. uninstall then reinstall), or force
 a reinstallation of mesa with +x11
