 I don't see why adding a new variant would help anything. Software simply
 needs to respect the CC environment variable. Great pains were gone to
 previously to fix all the ways in which atlas was not respecting CC; it
 seems the new version has introduced new ways of disrespecting it that now
 need to be addressed.
