Comment:

 Is your computer 64-bit capable (what's the output of `sysctl
 hw.cpu64bit_capable`) and what is build_arch set to in your macports.conf?
 I am able to reproduce this problem if I set build_arch to i386 on my
 64-bit capable Snow Leopard Mac.
