 "sudo port install mrtg" nevertheless returns 2.16.2 as of today (26 feb
 11)

 this means that mrtg is inoperable as the error below appears; the author
 of mrtg reports that said bug was fixed in 2.16.4, thereby confirming that
 2.16.2 has the bug and this 2.17.2 would presumably not, yet a "port
 install mrtg" gives you 2.16.2 and the corresponding upgrade operation
 does not, in fact, upgrade
